End Violence Against Women: A Call for Action
End Violence Against Women: A Call for Action
Violence Against Women (VAW) is a grave issue that transcends borders, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses, affecting 1 in 3 women globally. In the Philippines, the 2022 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) revealed that nearly 1 in 5 women have experienced violence from their partners, underscoring the urgency of addressing this crisis.
The yearly 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, held every November 25 to December 12, serves as a platform to amplify awareness and advocate for women's rights and protection. Central to this campaign is the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 (R.A. 9262), which criminalizes acts of physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse against women and children. This law symbolizes a pivotal step in safeguarding women's dignity and well-being, ensuring perpetrators are held accountable.
Two Significant Laws Addressing Violence Against Women
- Republic Act 11313 – The Safe Spaces Act (2019)This law extends protection to women against gender-based harassment in both public and private spaces, including streets, workplaces, and online platforms. It prohibits catcalling, wolf-whistling, sexist remarks, stalking, and other forms of harassment, emphasizing that respect and safety should be universal. Through this law, women are empowered to speak out against inappropriate behavior, and perpetrators face penalties for their actions.
- Republic Act 10364 – The Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act (2013)As a significant advancement from R.A. 9208, this law strengthens efforts to combat human trafficking, including the exploitation of women and children. It criminalizes acts such as recruitment, harboring, and transporting individuals for prostitution, forced labor, or other exploitative purposes. By emphasizing the need for prevention, protection, and prosecution, this law stands as a beacon of hope for victims seeking justice and rehabilitation.
Significance of the Campaign and Laws
The observance of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women is a reminder of our collective responsibility to address the roots of gender-based violence. It highlights the need for strong laws, community engagement, and education to break the cycle of abuse. Laws such as R.A. 9262, R.A. 11313, and R.A. 10364 are indispensable in creating safer environments for women and holding violators accountable. As we commemorate National Women’s Month and participate in this campaign, let us unite in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment. Together, we can create a society where every woman feels safe, respected, and valued.
